Kyushu National Museum features a gently curved exterior that blends with the surrounding mountains. In addition, the area surrounding the building retains much of the nature from before its construction, allowing visitors to enjoy the seasonal changes in its appearance.

It is the newest national museum to open after the Tokyo National Museum, the Kyoto National Museum, and the Nara National Museum. Based on the concept of "understanding the formation of Japanese culture from an Asian historical perspective," the museum not only holds exhibits but also plays a vital role in the protection and investigation of cultural properties. The museum also provides a wide variety of educational programs to make the museum a fun place to visit more than once.
