Equine Museum of Japan was established by the Japan Racing Association in 1977 within the Negishi Horse Racing Memorial Park, which commemorates the birth of Western-style horse racing that began in Yokohama in the 1860s, and is currently operated by the Equestrian Culture Foundation. The museum has been collecting, surveying, researching, and exhibiting artifacts nurtured by the interaction between horses and people in the fields of natural history, history, folklore, arts and crafts, and horse racing. The museum's collection consists of 15,000 items.

In addition to thoroughbreds and ponies, the Pony Center, which is also attached to the museum, cares for native horses, which are an ancient breed in Japan, and allows visitors to watch them graze and be ridden. The center passes down the role and appeal of horses to future generations through materials that prove the close relationship humans have had with horses as partners over the years.
