Yunoki Samiro: Choju Giga

Museum of Modern Art, Hayama
Finished

Artists

Samiro Yunoki
Textile artist Yunoki Samiro (b. 1922) began to pursue the craft of dyeing immediately after the end of the Second World War, after encountering mingei, or Japanese folk craft. For over seventy years now, he has been working in lavish colors and shapes to portray the little joys that come from everyday interactions with the world and the objects around us. His world of creation doesn’t stop at textiles, either, extending also to picture books, prints, and three-dimensional pieces. This exhibition looks at his current activities, including his work based on the twelfth and thirteenth century scrolls “Choju Giga” (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals), the original drawings for his picture book “Ame ni mo makezu” (Undaunted Too by the Rain), and works in the museum’s collection.
