Half a century ago, on July 28th 1958, film director Alain Resnais left for Japan to shoot the first few scenes of what was to become one of the greatest films in the history of cinema: Hiroshima Mon Amour. He was joined on August 14th by Emmanuelle Riva, who would along with Japanese actor Eiji Okada, play one of the two main roles in the film and incarnate with him a sort of mythical cinematic couple. The film was Resnais first feature length film, presented at Cannes in 1959 to phenomenal critical acclaim. Parallel with the French New Wave, the film signaled a resurgent French cinema and a new modernity for the medium.
On December 8th, the Franco-Japanese Institute of Tokyo welcomes Emmanuelle Riva for an exceptional encounter with the actress Mariko Okada and filmmaker Kiju Yoshida. A reading of Marguerite Duras texts by Okada and Riva, directed by Yoshida, as well as a round table discussion between Riva, Sylvette Baudrot, Chihiro Minato and Dominique Noguez will be held. Hiroshima Mon Amour will be screened at 18:00 at the Institute's l'Espace Image.
