Tadanori Yokoo
Without being shackled by established frameworks of art, Tadanori Yokoo has demonstrated an exceptional talent in various fields such as design, painting, photography, film, theater, music and literature. As a leading Japanese contemporary artist, he flourished as a graphic designer from the 1960s to the 1970s, and began to pursue a new career as a painter in 1981.
Now in his 70s, he continues to create highly refined, thought-provoking work. Yokoo's critical view of contemporary issues is reflected in a wide range of his unique expressions, winning much acclaim both domestically and internationally. Following a successful solo exhibition held at the Cartier Foundation in Paris in 2006, the "What's Mine is Mine" exhibition now being held at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa is enjoying a favorable response.
On view at this exhibition are photographs of Y-intersections that Yokoo shot in Tokyo over the past 2 years. Part of this series was featured in the "Tokyo 23 Wards Y-intersection Photo Series", a 2-year serial feature in the magazine Tokyo Jin". Starting with a shot of the Y-intersection where a model store he used to frequent as a child was located, Yokoo has been using this motif in over 100 works so far. The series is notable for his decision to depict this familiar, somewhat mundane feature of our landscape, and to make it the main motif of his work.
In addition, the photo book "Tokyo Y-intersection" (A4 size, 256 pages, ¥3990) will be launched in conjunction with the holding of this exhibition.
