Tatsumi Orimoto
As part of the Journées du Goût series of events at the French Institute, action artist and performer Tatsumi Orimoto is presenting a photo exhibition from the collection Art Mama & Bread Man, along with a performance on Sunday, June 7th.

Born in Kawasaki in 1946, Orimoto represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 2001. The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art presented in 2000 for the first time in Japan "Art Mama & Bread Man," which had previously been shown in New York and Berlin. The concept behind the Bread Man lies in what Orimoto defines as communicational art: in transforming himself into "Bread Man," Orimoto invites the spectator to question the notions of alterity, strangeness and monstrosity. "Why the Bread Man? Everyone asks me this, but the answer isn't really important. What is essential to me is how the public looks at and receives the work. The meaning of the Bread Man only appears via the gaze of the public."
