Yuga Nemoto et al.
From the late 18th century to the end of the Edo period, Tottori Domain experienced a flourishing artistic culture known as the "Golden Age of the Inaba Art Scene," where talented and individualistic painters such as Torei Hijikata, Yokoku Katayama, Gentan Shimada, Toko Kuroda, and Ichiga Oki gathered. A vibrant and fertile painting culture blossomed during this period. Among the painters who adorned this final era was Yuga Nemoto (1824-1866). Born into the Sandaya merchant family in Tottori, he moved to Edo at the age of 10 and apprenticed under Tottori Domain's official painter, Oki. Under his master, Nemoto eagerly absorbed works from a wide range of painting schools. Despite his youth, he steadily built his career, and in 1858, he was summoned as the domain's official painter.

Nemoto's work covered a diverse range of styles and themes, including traditional Chinese and Japanese paintings influenced by the Kano school, landscape and figure paintings inspired by Chinese painters from the Song to Ming dynasties, ukiyo-e-style contemporary genre paintings, portraits, and realistic landscapes. Adapting his style to the subject matter, Nemoto demonstrated an incredibly varied artistic output, rivaling his master Oki in versatility. Although his tumultuous life came to an end after only 42 years, he played a crucial role in shaping the foundation of the modern Tottori art scene by nurturing numerous disciples in his hometown.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Nemoto's birth, the museum is hosting the first large-scale retrospective exhibition. Featuring representative works and materials from Yuga Nemoto's early career to his later years, including previously unreleased pieces, the exhibition aims to provide a comprehensive view of the life and artistry of a painter who, with a brush in hand, illuminated a corner of Japan on the eve of modernity.
