Muneyoshi Yanagi (1889-1961) was a religious philosopher and pioneering founder of the Mingei (folk art) movement in Japan. After studying philosophy at the Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo), Yanagi founded the journal Shirakaba with several of his college contemporaries, producing essays and articles on religion, philosophy and art.
Yanagi's penchant for collecting crafts and art objects first emerged from a fascination with the beauty of Korean ceramics. He founded the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in 1936 with works from his own collection. This exhibition commemorates the 75th anniversary of the museum with a showcase of some 300 items from its collection, including ceramics, dyed and woven fabrics, wooden crafts, Buddhist sculptures and paintings.
