Okyo Maruyama
The Nezu Museum’s collection of pre-modern painting is a veritable treasure house of byōbu folding screens. Of particular note is Wisteria by Ōkyo Maruyama (1733–1795), designated an Important Cultural Property. Ōkyo conjured the coiling three-dimensionality of wisteria vine trunks through tsuketate, or outline-free single brushstroke technique, combined with impressionistic use of reddish purple, azurite blue and white pigments to evoke plump, complex, colored blossom clusters. Indeed, Wisteria is the pinnacle achievement of Ōkyo’s realist painting style. This exhibition focuses on the Wisteria screens in its presentation of fascinating folding screens, including the debut, post-conservation treatment, appearance of the sublime Flowers and Grasses by Tawaraya Sōtatsu’s studio.
