“Mandala” is a Sanskrit word which may be interpreted as “gaining the true essential meaning,” and in Esoteric Buddhism the term is used to indicate the visual representations of the spiritual world as revealed by Esoteric Buddhist doctrine. In Japan, the term mandala is given a wider interpretation to indicate all paintings of spiritual realms, including Buddhist Pure Land imagery, as well as “Suijaku” images which combine Buddhism with the local religions of Japan.
This exhibition presents approximately 40 paintings from the Nezu Museum collection, including Esoteric Buddhist mandalas and central worship figure paintings, Pure Land mandalas, and Suijaku mandalas. The Dainichi Nyorai and the Aizen Mandala, officially designated as important cultural properties of Japan, are exhibited for the first time, after completion of their recent restoration, just some of the highlights in an exhibition which promises an experience of the sublime beauty of Buddhist visual realms.
