Shintaro Suzuki – The Gaze of an Intimist

Sogo Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Shintaro Suzuki
Shintaro Suzuki was a Western-style painter active in the pre-war and post-war Showa era, mainly as a member of the anti-establishment Nika-kai (Second Society) artists’ group. Suzuki’s parents encouraged him to pursue art after his legs were damaged due to illness as a child. As a member of the Hakuba-kai painter’s association, he polished his skills with luminaries such Ryusei Kishida, traveling across Japan while using a cane and wheel chair and painting the landscapes that stirred his soul. In commemoration of the Sogo Museum of Art’s 30th anniversary, around 80 of Suzuki’s oil paintings from the collection, including still lifes and landscapes, are on display.
