Artists

Shunsuke Matsumoto
Shunsuke Matsumoto (1912-1948) began working as an artist before World War II and during the war, he founded “Shinjingakai (New Artsits’ Group)” together with Aimitsu, Saburo Aso, Masao Tsuruoka, and others. He was a leading artist of modern Japanese art. Early on in his career, he admired the Ecole de Paris and devoted himself to works by Georges Rouault, Amedeo Modigliani, George Grosz, Tsuguharu Fujita, and others. In this exhibition, we shall examine what Shunsuke absorbed from such works and how he developed them into his own expressions in search of the origin of his creativity
