Naojiro Harada Retrospective

Museum of Modern Art, Hayama
Finished

Artists

Naojiro Harada et al.
As the first Japanese student of the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, Naojiro Harada(1863-1899) befriended writer Ohgai Mori during his studies in Germany and became the model for the novel “Utakata no Ki”. Having taken on the academic methods and theory of Western painting, he then returned to Japan only to clash with a wave of anti-European painting and his personal struggle with illness. This exhibition reflects upon his career in his first retrospective for 100 years.
