Exhibiting works from “Space Program,” an ongoing project started in 2012 by Tom Sachs, a contemporary artist who began learning the tea ceremony in New York ten years ago. Imagining a trip to outer space, this exhibition asks “What would be good for the body and spirit during the long, tedious journey through space? Alcohol? Video games?” The answer he ultimately came up with is “exercise and tea.” Sachs also wondered, “If we were to introduce aliens to civilization on earth with only one example, should we choose the Egyptian pyramids or Japanese tea?”
“Tom Sachs: Tea Ceremony” presents cups and other tea ware Sachs created with a unique perspective on and deep respect for Japanese culture. The exhibition also includes works by Isamu Noguchi and a special showing of Sogetsu Kaikan’s stone garden “Heaven.” To Sachs, Japan is a heavenly country. Twelve works with Japanese motifs including Japanese swords, stone lanterns, and brand name goods are on display.
