Born to Ainu parents in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Bikky Sunazawa (1931-1989) was active as the artist from the 1950s. He was later recognized as a leading sculptor in Japanese post-war art. This exhibition features approximately 20 sculptures by Sunazawa including the “Wooden Mask” series (1970s), from a period when the artist reached maturity, as well as “Kami no shita (God’s Tongue)” and “Toh,” which depict tree spirits, and the monumental work “Kaze ni kiku (Listen to the Wind).” These will be accompanied by approximately 50 paintings and drawings shedding light on Sunazawa’s world and his empathy with nature, as well as the secrets behind his creations. It is his first solo show to be held in a national museum on Honshu, the largest and most populous island of Japan.
