Shoji Hamada (1894–1978) was a Mashiko, Ibaraki-born ceramics artist and leader of the Mingei (Folk Arts) movement who promoted craft-making traditions from places ranging from Okinawa to England. He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1955. This exhibition of 135 works from the Horio Mikio Collection at The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka includes important pieces by Hamada, who had a close relationship with the collector Horio. Works by other famed Mingei artists including Bernard Leach, Kanjiro Kawai, Keisuke Serizawa, Shiko Munakata, and Tatsuaki Kuroda are also exhibited. A new installation of featuring pottery from the Sanuki Mingeikan in Takamatsu by Yuta Nakamura (b. 1983), a student of Hamada’s production methods, is also featured.
