This solo exhibition is the latest installment of the artist’s works following his 2017 exhibition “Guzo,” and the concurrent shows “Free Hydrant Co” and “1:1” held last summer at Nanzuka 2G and 3110NZ.
Haroshi is an artist who since 2003 has engaged in creating sculpture and installation works through a unique and self-taught method of utilizing parts from old skateboard decks. He continues to receive much acclaim and recognition as one of the few artists to embody the depths of contemporary street culture through various activities including his collaboration with the street brand HUF led by the late Keith Hufnagel, as well as his receipt of the BATB trophy.
“I versus I” is a solo exhibition consisting entirely of new works and is based on the theme of “a battle against oneself.” The works presented are roughly divided into three series: “Mosh Pit,” a mosaic two-dimensional work made by chopping up used skateboard decks and rearranging them in a flat manner so as to convey the entire personal history of each skateboarder and skateboard culture as a whole in the form of a cohesive painting; the “Guzo” series featuring sculptural figures presented like guardian deities for all those who love and appreciate skateboarding and the culture that is associated with it; and a series of soft vinyl works that symbolize a love for things that have been reborn through repairing and remodeling old plastic vinyl action figures and breathing new life into them. While bearing witness to the changes in our lives and social structures that have inevitably been subjected to various restrictions due to the pandemic, Haroshi remained in his studio, and like a monk in training, quietly engrossed himself in creating the works that are showcased on this occasion.
In correspondence to this exhibition, NANZUKA will release a 520-page self-published catalogue archiving Haroshi’s works spanning from 2003 to present.
