‘Pangaea’ is an installation by Yoko Terauchi (1954- ), who moved to England in 1979 to study with Anthony Caro at St. Martins College of Art and Design. Since then, Terauchi has consistently worked on “sculpture” as a manifestation of “things. In this process, what Terauchi has been thinking about is how uncertain, partial, and one-dimensional perception is.

The red line drawn horizontally on the wall of the square exhibition room extends from the room to the outdoors. On the other hand, the small sphere in the center of the room is made of a square of paper painted red, but the red lines are so intricate that no matter how close viewers get, they cannot grasp it as a continuous object. The title ‘Pangaea’ is derived from the name given in the theory of continental drift to the appearance of the continents when they were one before they split up into what they are today (Pan = all + Gaia = land), but the use of the name of a continent that is lost and unknowable is also symbolic of Terauchi’s idea.
