Artists

Shigeo Toya
Shigeo Toya, one of Japan’s leading sculptors, has attempted to reconstruct the concept of “sculpture” and has consistently pursued the question of “what is sculpture?” His work, created by carving wood with a chainsaw, is deeply imbued with a critique of civilized modernity, an insight into humanity, memories of the land, and an imagination of nature. In this exhibition, the time and space of the museum, which stands on the shore of a man-made lake created by the construction of a dam, is one of the inspirations for a series of work linked to “forest,” “land,” and “water veins,” centered in a huge void (atrium space).
