NANZUKA is pleased to announce “Mythos Opus Pt. 2” at NANZUKA 2G and “Mythos Opus Pt. 3” at 3110NZ, a solo exhibition by Chicago-based artist Hebre Brantley. Along with this exhibition, “Mythos Opus Pt. 1” will be held at Megumi Ogita Gallery from October 29th.

Brantley was born in Chicago, received a BFA in Film from Clark Atlanta University, has a background in design and illustration, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Brantley’s symbolic use of conceptualized characters has given form to complex ideas of nostalgia, spirit, power, and hope. Color schemes, pop art motifs, and the characters he creates make his multi-layered and multidimensional work more personal. He was heavily influenced by the AfriCOBRA movement that occurred on the South Side of Chicago in the 60s and 70s and considers his mural and graffiti work to be part of his African-American lineage. He works with a variety of materials, from oil, acrylic, watercolor, and spray paint to non-traditional materials such as coffee and tea. His work challenges the traditional view of heroes and protagonists and offers viewers a new perspective on contemporary narratives.

His solo exhibition at NANZUKA 2G explores the reflections on “masculinity” through portraits of well-known American figures. Utilizing the iconography of characters such as Batman and Robin, the exhibition explores the path from youth to adulthood. In our current cultural system, the correlation between leadership functions and masculinity is changing, which in turn is changing our perceptions and expectations of the concept of “masculinity” itself. This exhibition asks, “Who are our heroes and how do we recognize them? Who are our leaders? Who should we follow? And why?”.

The exhibition at 3110NZ explores the concept of liberation and what it means to be free. Visitors are encouraged to focus on two works by Brantley in which his characters are standing with their arms crossed. In these two works with contrasting compositions, his characters are ready to take off with purpose, and determination. They invite the viewer to think with them about freedom and change. They expose the contrast between the notion of waiting for change and the notion of continuing to challenge ourselves towards the world we want to see.
