In the second half of 19th century, vast number of Japanese works of art crossed the ocean resulting in the birth of the movement known as Japonisme that dominated Europe. Above all, ukiyo-e, the Japanese woodblock prints, had a particularly strong influence on Western artists. What did they find to be novel and what impressed them so much that they started incorporating the motifs into their own art? In this exhibition we will present around 200 works, consisting mainly of ukiyo-e masterpieces from Japan and abroad, but also Japonisme artworks from Europe, America and Russia, and will examine the various aspects of the expressions seen in ukiyo-e prints that fascinated the world.
