This spring, a special exhibition on children's ukiyo-e of the Meiji period, "Children of the Civilization and Opening of Japan" (original title Les enfants de l'ère Meiji - A l'école de la modernité < 1868-1912>) was held in Paris, France. Through approximately 140 works, the exhibition introduced the lively depiction of children, the vivid colors of woodblock prints, and the social changes brought about by the encounter with Western culture.
This return exhibition will feature approximately 80 works from the museum's collection of Meiji Ukiyo-e prints, focusing on "children's paintings," in the first and second periods. In 2017, the museum also held the exhibition "Ukiyo-e ni miru Kodomotachi no Bunmei Kaika" (The Civilization and Development of Children in Ukiyo-e), focusing on the appeal of Ukiyo-e for children. This year's exhibition includes works by the French artist Vigneau, who came to Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and introduces the children who played and learned between the new style of the Meiji era and the remnants of the Edo period, and the eyes of the adults who watched them grow up. (Some works have been replaced from the Paris exhibition to protect the works.)
