Hiroki Yamamoto (b. 1982), a native of Chiba City, is one of the most sought-after painters of the next generation of realistic painting. Yamamoto studied classical techniques of oil painting at Musashino Art University and has been pursuing realistic expression from the very beginning. He says that his practice is like making a movie: he conceives the script, calculates the poses of the characters, the costumes, the furniture and other props, the overall layout, the lighting, and other details. He then creates a work that can be appreciated for hundreds of years. His works have a unique texture, with every eyelash and fingertip movement depicted with such precision that they could be mistaken for photographs.
A woman in a classic, elegant dress, sitting in a dignified setting. Another woman wears a futuristic and elaborate device and throws a sharp glance at us. Yamamoto's portraits exude a dignity that is somewhat unapproachable and a story that is enigmatic. His goal is to create realistic paintings for our time. With a sensibility that can only come from being born in the 1980s and being familiar with pop culture elements such as animation and video games, Yamamoto expands the framework of conventional realistic painting. This exhibition will feature approximately 40 of his major paintings from his student days to his latest works. The show is organized to look back on Yamoto’s past achievements and forward to the future.
