Setsu Asakura
This is the first full-scale retrospective exhibition of Setsu Asakura (1922-2014), a painter and stage designer. Born in Yanaka, Tokyo, the eldest daughter of sculptor Fumio Asakura (1883-1964), Asakura studied under Japanese-style painter Shinsui Ito from the age of 17 and was recognized at a young age for her talent in depicting modern figures with a refined sense of color.
After the war, she became a member of the New Production Society and sought new pictorial expression through the study of overseas artists such as Pablo Picasso and Ben Shahn. While interviewing workers in coal mines and fishing villages and tackling social issues such as the 1960 Security Treaty, she would collaborate with artists in various genres such as theater and design, and after the mid-1960s, he shifted the weight of his activities to stage design.

This exhibition introduces the variety of his appeal through a total of approximately 200 works, including more than 40 paintings and drawings that have been little known until now, as well as stage art models, design drawings, documents, and original illustrations for picture books.
