Jutaro Kuroda
Jutaro Kuroda (1887-1970) was a Western-style painter who devoted himself to the development of the Kansai Western-style painting scene from the Meiji era to the Showa era. In 1904, Kuroda entered the school of Takeshiro Kanokogi in Kyoto, and the following year he began studying under the tutelage of Chu Asai and Kanokogi at the Shogoin Institute of Western Painting and the Kansai Bijutsuin.

In 1918 and 1921, he traveled to France, where he developed his own style of painting, influenced by Impressionism and Cubism. On the theoretical side, he wrote numerous books on art and laid the foundation for the study of art history in Japan, and from 1919, he taught at the Kansai Bijutsuin and devoted himself to teaching younger artists.

This exhibition will display three works by Kuroda from the museum collection, along with works by Kuroda's teachers, Kanokogi and Asai, and works by related artists who worked at the Kansai Bijutsuin, in an attempt to reconsider Kuroda's contributions to the Kansai Bijutsuin and Kansai Western painting world.
