450 Years After the Fall of the Muromachi Shogunate: Ashikaga Shoguns Ride Through the Warring States!

The Museum of Kyoto
Finished
The Muromachi shogunate established a samurai government in Kyoto. The Ashikaga shoguns, who led the Muromachi Shogunate, continued to search for a way to survive with their direct retainers and feudal lords, even as the country entered the turbulent age of the Warring States period.

The year 2023 marks the 450th anniversary of the exile of Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the last shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, from Kyoto. This exhibition traces the path of Ashikaga shoguns who faced the stormy seas of the Warring States through first-class historical documents, including the Toji Yuri Documents, a national treasure owned by Kyoto Prefecture, and the Kyoohogokokuji Documents, an important cultural property owned by the Kyoto University Museum.
