Sculptor Akio Ohmori (1971- ) works mainly with wood and metal, using both real and imaginary objects as motifs. His sculptures are mysterious as if imbued with spirituality, and so realistic that they seem ready to move at any moment.
After graduating from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 1996, Ohmori trained at Satoshi Yabuuchi's studio before going independent. He not only exhibits his works at galleries, department stores, art fairs, and museums in Japan and abroad, but also actively collaborates with fashion brands, restaurants, TV dramas, musicians, and other different fields to expand his range of expression.
He will present a diverse range of works, including the "in the frame" series, in which motifs appear to float lightly due to the gimmick of a mirror, and the "Portrait of Light" series of works featuring dogs and cats sheltered at the Kumamoto City Animal Protection Center.
In addition, a phantom statue of Dainichi Nyorai, created by Kukai at To-ji Temple approximately 1,200 years ago but destroyed by fire in 1486, will be dedicated to Sanuki Kokubunji Temple (Kagawa Prefecture) in October 2023 after a 10-year process of restoration based on Kukai's definition and Omori's interpretation. The seated head of Dainichi Nyorai and four lion statues, which are incarnations of Myoo, will be exhibited at the exhibition.
The exhibition will feature works ranging from the university graduation project "Crow Boat Sublimates" (1996) to representative works such as "Elephant with Unremovable Thorns" (1999) and "Babirusa" (2016), as well as collaborations with fashion brands and "Lupin's Daughters" (2016).
