Commemorating the 350th Anniversary of the Construction of the Former Okada Family Residence and Sake Brewery: Brewing Sake, Enjoying Sake

Itami City Museum of Art, History and Culture
Finished
During the Edo period, the town of Itami was lined with many sake breweries, bustling with people coming and going. High-quality sake produced in Itami, known by special names like "Itami Morohaku" and "Tango," gained popularity in Edo. The former Okada family residence and sake brewery was built in the center of Itami in 1674 (Enpo 2) and had been brewing sake for over 300 years until 1984 (Showa 59). As the oldest sake brewery with a clear construction date, it is an important relic that conveys the prosperity of sake brewing in Itami during the Edo period. In 1992, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

In April 2024, the former Okada family residence and sake brewery will celebrate its 350th anniversary since its construction. To commemorate this occasion, an exhibition will be held to introduce the former Okada family residence and sake brewery as well as sake brewing in Itami.
