Encountering Momoyama Ware - Momoyama Design

The Museum of Kyoto
Finished
During the Momoyama period (1573-1600), many new and innovative ceramics were produced that had never been seen before in the history of Japanese crafts. These were the so-called "Momoyama ware." Sanjo Street in the vicinity of the Kyoto Culture Museum was called "Setomono-ya-machi" at the time and was lined with stores selling Momoyama ware. Excavations in the area have uncovered a rich variety of Momoyama ware, which has attracted the attention not only of archaeologists but also of current artists.

This exhibition, with the special cooperation of the Hatanaka Laboratory of Kyoto City University of Arts, introduces contemporary artworks newly created under the influence of Momoyama ware, along with excavated artifacts.
