Gonzalo Chillida
Gonzalo Chillida (San Sebastian, 1926-2008) developed his talent in his early years. This exhibition focuses not on the metaphysical paintings he made in Castile as an experiment in geometric abstraction and cubism but on the work he made in Paris, where he came to form his artistic style.

Chillida's interest in primitive art began in 1955 when he visited the Etruscan cemetery ruins of Cerveteri, Italy while participating in a group exhibition at the Royal Academy in Rome. In addition, his interest in prehistoric Basque history and his passion for fossils and minerals led him to use sand as a primary material in his work.

Upon returning to his hometown of San Sebastian in 1960, the sea, forests, sand, and sky became the main themes of Chillida's work. In his later years, Chillida's work established an intimacy with nature and took on the flavor of Oriental art. The focus of his attention shifted to the boundary between sea and earth, the receptacle of light, water and sand, nature and culture, language and the inexpressible.
