Kiri-e is a technique of creating pictures by cutting and pasting paper with scissors or a knife. By taking advantage of the cuts (lines and cross sections) created by cutting, a unique effect is created that is different from that of paint. It is said that the term “kiri-e" was first used in Japan in the 1960s, and this method of paper cutting and modeling is a traditional culture that has been used since ancient times for ceremonies before the gods.

This exhibition features over 100 works by seven of Japan's leading female paper cutout artists. Hina Aoyama is known for her work cut out like delicate lacework using only small scissors; SouMa is known for her three-dimensional, multilayered, and exquisite works that transcend the concept of paper cut-outs. Yuna Chikushi painstakingly cuts out many parts and paints them with paints and pastels to create humorous and slightly mysterious works. Risa Fukui creates powerful works with bold compositions and depictions of curves backed by her advanced drawing skills. Kiriken Masayo's creature-themed works are full of life and a sense of three-dimensionality that makes it hard to believe that they were all created from a single sheet of connected paper. Maki Matsubara uses handmade washi paper from her hometown Yame to cut seasonal flowers and animals from a single sheet of paper. Kyoko Yanagisawa is a leading kiri-e artist using traditional Japanese astringent paper.
