NANZUKA is pleased to present Jess Johnson’s solo exhibition “Obelisks and Viroids” at Sushi Saito Hanare NANZUKA.
Johnson was born in Tauranga, New Zealand. She graduated from the University of Canterbury in 2001, and after spending ten years living in Melbourne, Australia, she relocated to New York in 2016.
In recent years, Johnson has actively held exhibitions in Australia, New Zealand, and other countries, participating in both solo and group exhibitions including Jack Hanley Gallery (NY, USA), NANZUKA (Tokyo, Japan), the National Gallery of Australia (ACT, AU), Christchurch Art Gallery (New Zealand) and Meow Wolf (SF, USA)
In this exhibition, in addition to two of Johnson’s drawings and sculptural wall works, a quilt created in collaboration with her mother, Cynthia Johnson will be presented.
Centered on ideas of technology and corporeality, sometimes ancient and sometimes futuristic, Johnson’s fictional worlds are initially developed through hand-drawn illustrations and then expand into diverse media such as installation, video, virtual reality (VR), and fashion. By combining meticulous hand-drawn lines with a science-fictional vision, Johnson’s work immerses viewers in captivating and otherworldly environments.
We look forward to welcoming you to the exhibition.
