Mai Yamashita + Naoto Kobayashi (hereafter referred to as Yamashita + Kobayashi) is an art unit from Chiba Prefecture whose video works and installations have been presented in biennales and exhibitions in Japan and abroad. From works such as "How Beautiful The World Could Be” (2019), which documents a bicycle running against the backdrop of the sunset and beautiful scenery of Setouchi, to "infinity~mirage" (2021), wherein an image of a "∞" symbol emerging through a mirage on the embankment of Ikuji Coast, Toyama Prefecture is live-streamed on the internet, what is consistently observed in the works of Yamashita + Kobayashi is their attitude towards production that seeks to reconsider various phenomena in nature and society as mediated through their actions. This exhibition is Yamashita + Kobayashi’s largest solo exhibition in Japan. It features 57 works centering on videos, installations, and paintings, ranging from those produced in the early days of their artistic career to more recent years, including the new work “NC_045512,” which was specially commissioned for this occasion, and several pieces that will be presented for the first time. The first half introduces their most recent endeavors, focusing on new works that attempt to uniquely approach the multifaceted aspects of contemporary society that have come to light due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The second half presents an overview of their activities thus far, showcasing a number of works that have been selected through their ties to the "sea." In the art context that begins with the rejection of terminology and common sense, Yamashita + Kobayashi mention creating works that are "always premised on the fear of the unknown and the excitement brought about by freedom.” As a testimony of this, their works quietly provide us with clues to survive in this contemporary world that is permeated by chaos and uncertainty.
