The beginning of "My Representative Work" dates back to 2007. Founder Masao Hoki aimed to create something distinctive for the museum, so he gathered artists and commissioned them to create large-scale works, numbering over 100, based on themes the artists themselves envisioned for future representative work.
Upon the museum's opening in 2010, the completed work was displayed in a special exhibition room, Gallery 8. Unlike most rooms with white walls, Gallery 8 features black walls, a black floor, and a black ceiling. In individual spaces divided by glass, each artist's work is exhibited one by one.
The energy spent creating their representative work is tremendous, fueling not only their individual pieces but also igniting a spirit of competition among the artists. Until the works are exhibited, artists remain unaware of what their peers are creating. Naturally, the audience, too, is not informed until the works are delivered. While the Hoki Museum has around 60 artists in its collection, the artists exhibited here are currently among the most shining. The work will be displayed continuously for three years. Thus, the "My Representative Work" exhibition, after four rotations, is now reaching its fifth iteration.
*For this exhibition, an audio guide is available, allowing visitors to hear explanations of the works in the artists' voices. Please access the dedicated site via the QR code installed next to each artwork for the audio guide.
