Petra Noordkamp learns from photography, and her work often fluidly navigates the realm of imagery, exploring how people's experiences, memories, and even dreams influence perceptions of buildings and urban environments. They quietly speak, reflecting her narrative and captivating with an irresistible allure.
"Better Not Move" is a photography, film, and book project. In 2020, Noordkamp came to Japan as an artist in residence. She was intrigued by meditative spaces and walled gardens but also confronted with the fear of earthquakes. The anxiety of when disaster might strike became a reality when she lost a loved one just months before. During her stay in Japan, grief and mourning intertwined with fear, conflicting with the resolve to remember and to move forward.
The small Japanese house where Noordkamp stayed was a place filled with fear of earthquakes and grief over her partner's loss, yet she found solace in observation. Stone structures, rooted tree roots, soft moss, and the lines of window frames are captured with sharp framing and expressed with a profound gaze. Their beauty seems inherently clinging to the images, questioning whether seeking beauty is essential to overcoming fear and sorrow.
"Better Not Move" is a private and intimate installation and a space for silence and meditation.
※ The exhibition includes a 26-minute film. Language: English with Japanese subtitles.
