The first solo exhibition in Japan of Thai artist Pex Pitakpong features vibrant and distinctive artworks inspired by pop culture, manga, and anime. Pitakpong, initially a freelance illustrator, transitioned to painting in 2015 and created the character "Mari." Pitakpong's pieces depict people adorned as animals, plants, and imaginary creatures, using brilliant colors as metaphors for diverse lifestyles. The exhibition includes the new work "Akha," inspired by the Akha tribe, a small ethnic group residing in the highlands of Asia, who engage in semi-nomadic agriculture in mountainous regions, preserving their unique culture. It tackles the problems of statelessness among certain Akha tribe members, leading to social challenges encompassing human rights issues, economic poverty, and educational disparities. The showcase comprises seven canvas pieces and 99 drawings, reflecting the artist's exploration of complex themes.
