Saodat Ismailova
Saodat Ismailova is an artist and filmmaker from Uzbekistan. She has received worldwide attention, having shown in the 2022 Venice Biennale as well as documenta fifteen. A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam.

Ismailova’s camera captures the very landscape of Uzbekistan: the deserts and ancient ruins of the Silk Road, the cities of the Islamic world, past and present, and buildings erected in the Soviet era. Within this landscape, Central Asian myths and folklore, rituals, and customs are quietly passed down and performed by women across generations. There, the boundaries between reality and parallel worlds blur, and collective memories emerge and vanish.

Five major works from recent years will be screened for the first time in Japan, with Japanese subtitles, at this year’s Theater Commons Tokyo. Included in the program are Her Right, a collage of Uzbek feature films from the 1930s to 1980s depicting women and their customs, "18,000 Worlds," a new work from 2023 that is inspired by the cosmology of Islamic mysticism, and Bibi Seshanbe, a Central Asian Cinderella story that drew much attention at Documenta.
