Shoko Hirose graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018. After graduation, she worked as a designer in the gaming industry and currently engages in activities crossing over the fields of art and illustration.
Hirose's concept revolves around an approach to painting made possible by the blurred boundaries between digital and material existence in contemporary times. She produces and presents painting works using various techniques, including a method of adding hand-drawn elements to digitally created works and other diverse techniques. Additionally, under the pseudonym "Hirose," she handles a wide range of works as an illustrator, contributing illustrations to popular works in Japan and abroad such as games, light novels, and "Hatsune Miku," thereby attracting attention as one of the leading artists in the burgeoning illustration scene.
In this exhibition, Hirose will present works centered around seven scenes inspired by a particular word, forming a story based on it.
The story is set in a dystopian near future. Hirose will translate the landscapes and events experienced by the protagonist, a girl who becomes an outcast in that world, on her final journey into a series of artworks. She will use formative language to depict the scenes and records of the "world" that the girl encounters for the first time.
Furthermore, while adopting the format of a story, Hirose seems to attempt to highlight the variable boundary between reality and the world of creation and fiction, as well as to touch upon the ideals and ethical views that creative works have traditionally guaranteed, pointing out their respective imperfections and aiming to reflect the continuous dialogue and charm between the two sides, as they interact and regenerate across boundaries.
