The Hara School

The Museum of Kyoto
Finished
The Hara school, founded in the mid-Edo period by the Zaichu (1750-1837), took on commissions from the imperial court and Kasuga Taisha Shrine and depicted a gorgeous and detailed world for generations. There are many Hara school paintings still in existence in Kyoto. These works were a feast for the eyes of court nobles, the emperor, and the imperial family, and were also sought after by wealthy townspeople.

This exhibition is the first step in a retrospective of the Hara School's artwork and introduces a selection of the outstanding works that still live on in Kyoto.
