The World of Ainu Architecture and Culture - Cise, Makiri, Attus

National Archives of Modern Architecture
Finished
The Pun-kar Exhibition is a collaborative exhibition aimed at introducing Ainu culture, organized as part of the Network Project for Museums and Other Institutions Connecting Ainu Culture (affectionately known as "Pun-kar"), in which the National Ainu Museum and 68 member institutions cooperate.

"Cise" is an Ainu word meaning "house." The Cise, which serves as the center of life, is where people are born, raised, work, and pray to Kamuy (gods). Plants are widely used not only as building materials for the Cise but also as materials for ritual objects and tools. Men carve wood with makiri (a small knife), engraving their unique patterns, while women weave cloth with thread made from tree bark, embroidering and creating attus (bark clothing). Even today, people live alongside Kamuy while using items made from wood. This exhibition will introduce Ainu household items made from traditional Cise construction methods and materials derived from plants. Explore contemporary Ainu culture, including crafts created by modern artisans.
