Akita Ranga" is the name given to a group of paintings created by Naotake Odano and other feudal warriors in Akita during the mid-Edo period (1603-1868).
Odano, who came into contact with the latest scientific and artistic trends through the herbalist Gennai Hiraga, learned from the realistic expressions of the West and the East, which were brought to Japan during the isolation of the country, and innovated conventional painting. His techniques were passed on to Shozan Satake, the 8th lord of the Akita domain, and several young Akita warriors began painting.
This first special exhibition of Akita Ranga in 23 years at the museum will present the collection of the finest examples of Akita Ranga, allowing visitors to enjoy the elegant world of Akita Ranga painting. The exhibition also traces the history of how Akita's feudal warriors became the first to create realistic paintings in the modern era.
