The Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki is located on the shores of Senba Lake in Mito, which is filled with water and greenery. Many water birds fly in and out of the lake, and the surrounding trees show their seasonal expressions, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. The building of the museum, with its greenish-blue roof and brown granite walls, was designed by Junzo Yoshimura (1908-1997), one of Japan's leading modernist architects. Since its opening in 1988, the museum has introduced a wide variety of modern art from Japan and the West, including work by artists associated with Ibaraki, such as Taikan Yokoyama, Imosen Ogawa and Tsune Nakamura.
