Kurashiki City Art Museum was originally built as the main building of Kurashiki City Hall. It was designed by the famous architect Kenzo Tange in 1960. When a new city hall was built, the museum's building was redesigned into a municipal art museum when a Kurashiki-born artist, Yoson Ikeda, donated his works to the city. The museum opened at the same time with the Kurashiki City Library and the Kurashiki Museum of Natural History in 1983, forming a joint cultural zone.
