The museum opened in April 1986. The Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art was established as part of the 100th anniversary of the Shizuoka Prefectural Assembly. In March 1994, the museum opened a new wing, the Rodin Pavilion, which features 32 sculptures, including Rodin's "Gates of Hell," in a large, brightly lit space. The museum will continue to expand its collection of artwork, exhibitions, workshops, digital content, and other activities with the aim of making new strides in the future.
