Artists

Hisui Sugiura
Hisui Sugiura (1876-1965) is a pioneer of modern design in Japan. In 1908, Sugiura joined the Mitsukoshi Gofukuten (present-day Mitsukoshi department store) and became one of their main designers. He also designed advertisements and packaging for companies such as beverage maker Calpis and soy sauce maker Yamasa, as well as numerous book designs. Today, Hisuiʼs straightforward and sophisticated design remains as fascinating as ever. In addition to his most typical works, such as posters and collections of original designs, this exhibition features sketches that are the starting point of his creative process as well as photographs and his treasured possessions, tracing the world of Hisui Sugiura.
