In a time when it has become difficult to find hope in the belief that "the future will be better," an unspoken sense of anxiety and stagnation quietly spreads through our daily lives, and cities, too, are being optimized for uniform diversity while being covered by massive capital and artificial structures.
"Escape routes" are "practices for living" that, in the face of this vast road stretching out before us, find alternative paths with our own hands, and establish new routes that connect ourselves to society. This exhibition introduces the perspectives and practices of seven groups of artists working in the fields of architecture, fashion, design, theater, street culture, and contemporary art. Through them, we explore the "escape routes" that arise from each individual's methods, such as working on our immediate environment and relationships in a society that cannot be easily managed, opening up possibilities for new connections and actions, and trusting our own gaze.
The space of Arts Maebashi, once a commercial facility, branches off into different routes, sometimes intersects, and expands like a plaza, opening up "new paths" on the extension of everyday life. Let's go find the "escape routes" in our lives through the practices of these artists.
