The International House of Japan is a private, non-profit organization established in 1952 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation and other domestic and international organizations and individuals, with the aim of promoting international mutual understanding through cultural exchange and intellectual cooperation between the people of Japan and the rest of the world.
With these objectives in mind, the activities of the International House of Japan consist of the Program Division, which implements various international exchange programs in the fields of culture, academics, and education, either independently or in cooperation with various domestic and international organizations, and the Operations Division, which maintains and operates the facilities that support these programs as places for international exchange. The most distinctive feature of the International House of Japan is that these two divisions are organically linked and complement each other in order to effectively carry out programs.
As of April 1, 2012, the International House of Japan became a public interest incorporated foundation, and individual and corporate donations to the International House of Japan continue to be tax exempt. The activities of the International House of Japan are supported by the cooperation and assistance of many individuals, corporations, and grant foundations in Japan and abroad.
