This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Pablo Picasso, and in what it is calling a celebration, the Musee National Picasso-Paris is holding an exhibition in collaboration with British fashion designer Paul Smith.
Picasso Celebration: The Collection in a New Light is curated by museum president Cecile Debray and curator Joanne Snrech, with Paul Smith leading the art direction. Held from March 7 to August 27, 2023, the exhibition is organized around Picasso’s masterpieces from throughout his career such as Les Demoiselles D’Avignon (1907, Museum of Modern Art, New York), Pablo Picasso Self-Portrait (1901, Musee National Picasso-Paris), Guernica (1937, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid), The Pan Flute (1923, Musee National Picasso-Paris), and Portrait of Dora Maar (1937, Musee National Picasso-Paris).
The exhibition will also feature work by contemporary international artists influenced by Picasso, such as Guillermo Kuitca, Obi Okigbo, Cheri Samba, and Mickalene Thomas, who took inspiration from Guernica to create a series of work about African-American civil rights and the Black Lives Matter movement.
