Known for the iconic portraits of daughter Reiko, Ryusei Kishida (1891–1929) is regarded as one of the leading figures of modern Japanese art. Over a remarkably short yet prolific career, painting styles evolved continuously, drawing inspiration from Post-Impressionism, Northern Renaissance realism, Chinese painting, and ukiyo-e.
Celebrating the 135th anniversary of Ryusei Kishida's birth, this exhibition presents works from the Sanno Art Museum Collection, including portraits, Japanese paintings from the Kyoto period, and still lifes from later years. Highlights include Portrait of Reiko, on view at the museum for the first time in four years. Also featured are works and archival materials connected to writers and artists associated with the Shirakaba circle, offering insight into the rich cultural environment surrounding Kishida's practice.
