Hirotoshi Iwasaki
Hirotoshi Iwasaki has focused on the technique of rotoscoping, which involves tracing live-action footage to create animation and has been exploring its potential as an artistic expression. In this exhibition, he traces recorded footage of people and landscapes that he can no longer meet directly due to the pandemic's impact. The artist perceives this act as a recollection and juxtaposes it with the origin of painting described by Pliny the Elder in his "Natural History," where Butades' daughter traced the silhouette of her departing lover's shadow on a wall. Through rotoscoping, Iwasaki reconsiders the act of drawing and the nature of memory.
